I am Sophia Barr, a mover, activist, and creator. Dance allows me to push my limits and become a better version of who I am. It also allows me to play pretend; to become someone else, feel their feelings, make their choices, and exhibit their behavior through physical exploration. In this process, I learn about others and about myself by “trying on” new realities. I believe this is what makes dance so healing and empowering.
One can lose themselves in music, breath, or the energy around them, no matter their training or skill level. It brings them closer to their body on a cellular level that is translated internally, then to the outside world. Additionally, dance unites people, while freeing them at the same, which is what I hope to achieve with my art. I feel that dance can be a powerful tool for creating change in our world by building empathy, awareness, and opportunity for people experiencing internal and external struggles. Sometimes our stories are best shared through a more vulnerable and individualized language. My art graciously uses the physicality of one’s lived experience to communicate on a universal level.
